彩色とは日本古来の画材を用いて金箔や胡粉下地等に鮮やかな紋様や仏教絵画を描いていきます。
使用する画材には天然顔料を用いた岩絵具(本岩絵具・新岩絵具)・水干絵具がありそれぞれの特徴を生かして使い分けていきます。
鮮やかなイメージのある彩色ですが掛軸の修復の際の『補彩』や仏像修復の際の『古色彩色』等様々な場面で重要な役割を担います。
またご寺院の内陣や、仏教系施設の内装は金箔を押した壁面に天女や極楽鳥などが舞っているものがあります。
これは空間を豪華絢爛な極楽浄土を表現しており、彩色職人がその重要な役割を担っています。
