Lacquer is a 100% natural painting material made by refining the sap of lacquer trees. It has good luster and thickness, and has excellent durability.
The history of lacquer is about 9000 years ago in the early Jomon period, when ornaments using red lacquer excavated from the Kakinoshima remains in Hokkaido were excavated, and the theory that Japan is the source of lacquer in the world is predominant.
Lacquer has been used for temple and shrine architecture, Buddhist altars, Buddhist statues, etc. since ancient times. The reason why arts and crafts such as national treasures and important. cultural properties were passed down to posterity is that the main body of the wood is protected by lacquer.
Lacquer was useful not only as a painting material but also as a versatile material from ancient Japan as a supplement and an adhesive.
However, nowadays, the demand for lacquer itself is decreasing due to the increase in cashew paints and chemical paints such as urethane, which are substitutes for lacquer.
In order to protect the traditional technique culture of Kyoto, we are concerned particular about "real lacquer" and also concerned to natural materials such as ground work for the base.
